What to pack for
The Gambia

The Gambia has a hot climate and a culture with some modesty considerations, so here's what we  recommend packing for your suitcase:

Clothing:

  • Light, loose-fitting clothes: Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Pack long-sleeved shirts and pants to cover up in the sun and for cultural respect, especially in rural areas.

  • Swimwear: Pack a swimsuit and cover-up for the beach or pool.

  • Footwear: Pack comfortable walking shoes, sandals or flip-flops. Consider sturdy shoes if you plan on exploring outside of tourist areas.

Essentials:

  • Sun protection: Pack a hat, sunglasses, and high SPF sunscreen.

  • Mosquito repellent: Dengue fever and malaria are present in The Gambia, so pack insect repellent with DEET.

  • Medications: Pack any medications you need, including prescription drugs and anti-diarrheal medication.

  • Power adapter: The Gambia uses British standard plugs (three rectangular prongs), so pack an adapter if needed.

  • Toiletries: Pack toiletries you normally use, but consider travel-sized options to save space. Toilet paper may not always be readily available, so pack some just in case.

Other:

  • Water bottle: A reusable water bottle is essential to stay hydrated in the heat.

  • First-aid kit: Pack a basic first-aid kit for minor cuts, scrapes, or insect bites.

  • Small flashlight: Power outages can occur, so a small flashlight can be helpful.

  • Cash: While few places accept credit cards, it's wise to have Gambian Dalasi (GMD) on hand for smaller purchases, taxis, and tipping.

Additional tips for older travelers:

  • Prescription medications: Pack a sufficient supply of any prescription medications you take, along with a doctor's note in case you need to get refills. Consider bringing medications in their original packaging for ease of identification.

  • Over-the-counter medications: Pack pain relievers, antihistamines, and any other over-the-counter medications you might need.

  • Medical alert bracelet (optional): Consider wearing a medical alert bracelet that lists any important medical conditions or allergies.

  • Comfortable clothing: Pack loose-fitting, breathable clothes made from natural fibers like cotton or linen. Opt for clothes that are easy to put on and take off, especially if you have any mobility limitations.

  • Supportive footwear: Pack comfortable shoes with good arch support and a non-slip sole. Consider shoes that are easy to slip on and off if bending down is difficult.

  • Walking stick or cane: If you find walking long distances challenging, a walking stick or cane can provide extra stability and support.

  • Compression socks: Compression socks can help improve circulation and reduce swelling in legs, especially during long flights or sitting for extended periods.

  • Leave some space in your suitcase for souvenirs!

By packing these essentials, you'll be well-prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable trip to The Gambia!
